Ground Source Review: Enfield, Kensa Contracting & ENGIE

Enfield Councils project with Kensa Contracting and ENGIE is the largest Shared Ground Loop Array heat pump programme in England. This project won the District Heating Project of the Year at the 25th annual H&V News Awards.

As shared ground loop arrays qualify as district heating the project was eligible for the Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI: this scheme has now closed – please visit this page to explore other funding) which supplies a 20-year income of £4.3 million to Enfield Council.  The project achieves both carbon and cost-saving benefits; by changing to ground source heat pumps 773tCO₂ is saved per year and tenants will benefit from savings of £400-700 on their heating and hot water bills. The latest readings suggest bills are more in the region of £200-250.

Dr. Matthew Trewhella, Kensa’s Contracting Director comments:

One of the great strengths of this system type is its flexibility and scalability. Shared ground loop systems can be featured in developments of just two properties (micro-district) whilst this project clearly demonstrates how the concept can be scaled up to much larger systems.
