Running Costs

This table illustrates the running costs for a ground source heat pump against an oil-fired boiler.

The table assumes the oil boiler is 80% efficient. The efficiency of the ground source heat pump is dependent upon the flow temperature into the heat distribution system; a variety of different Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) efficiencies have been used (see the first column).

For most retrofit installations into existing properties using radiators, the efficiency is likely to be around 275% – 325%.

Savings per kilowatt hour have been calculated against a range of oil and electricity prices. The kilowatt hour savings are then converted into an annual saving for a variety of different heat consumptions (see the last five columns).

The electricity cost is the marginal cost of electricity per kilowatt hour: it excludes the standing charge which would be incurred by virtue of the property’s remaining electricity use.
