Task: Final boreholes drilled
Everyone likes it when a plan goes to schedule and the twelfth and final borehole was completed on Wednesday, after holes ten and eleven had been drilled on Monday and Tuesday respectively. All boreholes are now installed and grouted up.
In total, 1704 metres of borehole have been drilled in under four weeks with 3408 metres of heat collector pipework installed within these holes. The drill rig has now left site and all other drilling equipment will be fully demobilised by next week.
Once the drilling team completed the final hole, the trenching and headering team returned to site on Thursday and Friday to continue with their work. They managed to complete another four trenches and will return next week to finish off their work.
Despite having several tons of drilling equipment driving over the site for the past few weeks, the ground has held up remarkably well. This is in no small part down to the ground protection laid by the drillers but we have also been helped by the dry weather. Once the ground has had a couple of weeks to settle, we will carry out a full site inspection and make good as necessary.
All is now set for the plumbers and electricians to attend site next week when work will begin to remove the existing electric night storage heaters and start installing the new heat pumps.

Project in brief:
- 22 flats – 21 are 1 bedroom and 1 is a 2 bedroom flat;
- Built in 1977;
- Heated by electric night storage heaters which have reached the end of their useful life and need replacing;
- Residents aged 55 +;
- A Kensa Shoebox ground source heat pump (6kW) to be installed inside each flat;
- New 150 litre unvented hot water cylinders in each flat;
- New radiators in each flat;
- New heating controls in each flat, which will be much easier for the residents to use;
- A ground source heat pump for the site office;
- 12 boreholes will be drilled with depths up to 154 metres to form a communal ‘micro district ground source heat pump system’.
