Task: Drilling preparations

Today’s on site activity at Trent & Dove Housing’s 60-flat heating upgrades scheme saw site mobilisation and preparations for drilling of the first two boreholes in the communal ground array.

Operatives from Kensa Contracting and Geodrill arrived on site and began site mobilisation and layout. Two drill rigs will be used on the project to decrease overall project timescales and lessen the impact on surrounding residents.

Utility service plans were consulted and further electronic testing was conducted to locate buried services. Once the services were located inspection pits were hand dug to a depth of 1.2m to ensure service survey locations were accurate.

The drill rigs were positioned onto the first two of 40 borehole locations. Once the rigs were in place, compound areas were constructed around the ground array locations and everything was left ready to begin drilling in the morning.

Project in a nutshell

  • Design and install communal ground source heat pump systems into two blocks of three-storey flats.
  • Drill 40 boreholes to an average depth of 140m
  • Manifold the boreholes to 12 individual ground arrays
  • Trench back to the 60 flats
  • Remove old inefficient night store heaters and hot water cylinder
  • Replace with a Kensa Shoebox 6kW, a highly efficient hot water cylinder and a wet radiator system.
  • Install thermostatic and time controls to allow total control for residents with individual heat requirements.
